When somebody says they are getting a root canal, it may conjure up ideas of a painful dental treatment that involves surgery or multiple visits. This is far from the truth! Root canals are relatively simple dental procedures that involve cleaning infection out of the tooth canal. They are necessary when the tooth becomes infected. In almost all cases, the root canal will save your tooth and can be taken care of in just one visit.
When the inner chamber of the tooth has become infected, there is a risk of damage to the supporting bone. A root canal involves accessing this inner chamber and clearing out all of the infected tissue. We then sterilize and fill the canal with a special material. This strengthens the tooth and we can cap the tooth with a crown to strengthen it. Getting a root canal as soon as one of our doctors suggests it can protect you from painful and costly procedures in the future. Eradicating the infection prevents further damage and protects the tooth structure.
